Member of the ELIAS Virtual Centre of Excellence
News: As of July 2026, the ELLIS Unit Graz is an official member of the ELIAS Virtual Centre of Excellence. The European Lighthouse of AI for Systainability (ELIAS) connects researchers in academia with practitioners in the industry to differentiate Europe as a region where AI research builds towards a sustainable long-term future for our planet, contributes to a cohesive society, and respects individual preferences and rights.
Reading Group: Mathematics & Efficiency of Deep Learning
Our reading group, in collaboration with the ELLIS Unit NRW, examines the interplay between the theoretical foundations of deep learning and the practical challenge of making machine learning efficient. Open to researchers at all levels, it offers a platform for open dialog and discussions about fresh research findings. Approx. every other Monday @ 5pm CET / 11am EST / 8am PST

Poster Session ELLIS Unit Graz & GraML
On June 17, GraML and the ELLIS Unit Graz hosted a Poster Session for the AI community at TU Graz to celebrate recent work, foster the scientific exchange within our network and strengthen our internal collaboration. This event was part of the ELLIS Sites ICML Fest 2026: Celebrate, Connect, Collaborate.
Startup InspirAItion Day
The ELLIS Unit Graz co-organized the StartUp InspirAItion Day at Graz University of Technology on May 21, 2026. It was a morning full of honest entrepreneurial stories, practical insights, and inspiring conversations to spark the option of an AI entrepreneurship career path in our junior researchers. A huge thank you to Ralph Stöckl (SimplyAI FlexCo), Samuel Ziegler (vetosec), Lucija Veličan Marković, PhD (Ruth), and Dr. Michael Reip (openmaind) for sharing their experiences so openly and authentically and to Mario Fallast and Harald Jenull for guiding the discussion and enriching it with their own entrepreneurial wisdom.
2 Workshops at AIROV2026
The ELLIS Unit Graz co-organized two workshops at the Austrian Symposium on AI, Robotics and Vision (AIROV), April 13–15, 2026 in Leoben. One of our workshops was on Current Trends and Future Potential: Spiking Neural Networks and the second one on Physics-Informed Machine Learning and Hybrid Modelling.
Seminar: Tensor Factorizations Meet Probabilistic Circuits
The ELLIS Unit Graz co-organized the Dagstuhl Seminar 26102 entitled “Tensor Factorizations Meet Probabilistic Circuits”, which took place from March 01-06, 2026 at Schloss Dagstuhl in Wadern.
Workshop on Energy-Efficient AI: Models, Algorithms, and Hardware for Sustainable Intelligence
Together with the ELLIS Unit Nijmegen, we hosted a highly engaging workshop at the ELLIS UnConference kicking-off EurIPS 2025 on December 2, 2025 in Copenhagen. We heard about high-level research in this emerging field, discussed innovations that pave the way for efficient AI systems, and thought about how ELLIS can contribute to creating a sustainable European AI ecosystem.
ELLIS Coordinators Retreat 2025
We attended the ELLIS coordinator’s retreat from October 6-8, 2025, hosted by the ELLIS Units Nijmegen, Delft and Amsterdam. We’re happy to have learned so much from other coordinators and strenghtened research management collaborations within the ELLIS network.
New Member of the ELSA Network
News: As of September 2025, the ELLIS Unit Graz is an official member of the ELSA Network: the European Lighthouse on Secure and Safe AI. ELSA is a growing network of excellence that spearheads efforts in foundational safe and secure AI methodology research. ELSA builds on and extends the internationally recognized and excellently positioned ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) network of excellence.
